The Orval logo, with the gold ring and trout, is based on the Legend of Matilda: In 1070 AD, Countess Matilda was passing through the forest when she and her retinue stopped at a clear spring. Matilda trailed her hand in the water, and her wedding ring accidently slipped off her finger and sank. Distraught, she prayed fervently for its return . . . and a trout swan to the surface with her ring in its mouth. Matilda declared this a "Valley of Gold" (In French, "or" means "gold") and gave the land to the church. "Matilda's Spring" can still be seen at Orval; here is a link to the Abbaye Notre Dame d'Orval website and here is our Orval page.
